antique French Broderie de Marseille lap quilt or petassoun
An unusual antique French Broderie de Marseille lap quilt or petassoun dating from about 1900 - 1920.
These delightful little quilts were made as lap quilts when presenting the new baby, and come in the most beautiful designs. They are avidly collected, and have consequently become rare in good condition.
This example is unusual in that one side is white, and the other a dark cream/pale caramel. I initially thought the darker side was the reverse, but on looking at the construction of the quilt believe it to be the "right" side. It is simply, but beautifully worked with tiny hand stitching along the diagonal ribbing which must have entailed many weeks of arduous work.
Measurement: 16" x 16 1/2" Twill tape binding.
